ABOUT CAPE PATERSON Cape Paterson is situated on the southern coast of Australia, approximately 1.5 - 2 hours drive from Melbourne. The coastline here forms part of the Bunurong Marine Reserve which is recognised as being a unique area of marine flora, fauna and scenery. The Cape is about families, beauty and the sea with the coast having something for everyone. The bay beach is a childs delight and the modified rockpool is great for supervised swimming. The bay beach and the surf beach are patrolled throughout the summer and on public holidays in the warmer months. The town of Cape Paterson itself is a quiet place, largely populated by holiday homes. We do have a general stores, and a small, friendly tavern. WONTHAGGI The Cape was originally named after Lt. Colonel Paterson who was 2nd in Command of the Botany Bay Settlement. Much later, when coal mining began at Wonthaggi, the miners were quick to recognise the fishing and recreational possibilities of the nearby coastline. Some of the miners built shacks and boathouses on the forshore, and supplimented their income by catching fish and crayfish and selling them in town. The mine closed in the late 1960’s but has remained a local attraction, with underground mine tours held daily. Today Wonthaggi, only 8km from Cape Paterson, has a large number of shops, supermarkets, a cinema, golf club, bowling club and a number of pubs, clubs and restaurants. OTHER ATTRACTIONS If you’re interested exploring further afield, Cape Paterson is only 40km from Phillip Island, 70km from Wilson’s Promentory. And of course there’s all the glorious South Gippsland scenery in between. In particular, the drive from Cape to nearby Inverloch is one of the most spectacular journeys in Victoria and one of it’s best kept secrets. We’re sure that you’ll find plenty to do in the area - that is if you get tired of relaxing on the beautiful Cape Paterson beaches. |
